Necessary Equipment for Photo Hunt

Any DSLR, which is a digital camera that has interchangeable lenses. Starter DSLRs, like the Canon Rebel series or Nikon D series (like the Nikon D3200) will do just fine. Higher end DSLRs (like the Nikon D7100 or Canon 7D) are better for rapid fire photography and low-light conditions, but aren’t necessary. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PURCHASE CANON OR NIKON CAMERAS…ANY DSLR WILL DO!!!

You should also remember that there are two types of sensors in digital cameras which will affect the focal length of your telephoto lens.  Nikon designates them as DX and FX sensors.  FX sensor cameras are full frame sensors which will give you the same image size as a film camera.  In other words, a 300mm telephoto lens on a FX camera will yield an image exposed at 300mm.  A 300mm telephoto lens on a DX camera will yield an image exposed at 450mm.  A DX sensor will yield an effective 1.5 increase in the focal length of the lens.  Conversely a wide angle lens on a DX sensor will yield a narrower field of view than the same lens mounted on a FX sensor.  The advantage you gain on the telephoto end results in a decrease on wide angle.

As for lenses, you’ll need a variable zoom lens that goes to at least 300mm, such as a 70-300mm lens. If you have a lens that goes to 400mm or 500mm, it will get you even closer to your game animal. Fixed lenses (that have no zoom) can be used, but will limit you…as not having the capability to zoom in and out will mean you have to physically get closer to your game animal! We highly recommend that you purchase lenses with auto-focus capability. Auto-focus will make your job as a photographer a LOT easier.
